After the course we will have a little BBQ
and will perform the classicalVolta experiment
The experiment was firstly performed about 200 jears ago by the italian physicist Alessandro Volta. At that time, he described methane as "burnable air".

Please klick on the animated gif from the 2007 course to see a movie of the experiment. The 2010 image will be loaded when we have performed the experiment.

The experiment will be repeated in a little ditch behind the institute building. Methane is degasing while foot stomping on the sediment. The gas is collected in a funnel that is closed by a rubber stopper. A darting flame appears when the the gas is burned and the funnel is pressed down simultaneously.
