Phototrophic Consortia

Phototrophic consortia with brown and green anoxygenic phototrophc
bacteria. The left micrograph shows a partly collapsed consortia
giving a glance at the colorless cell in the center.
Scale bar: 5 micrometer
The outer, surrounding cells of the consortia (epibionts) appear in brown or green color. Thus they are called 'Pelochromatium' or ' Clorochromatium, respectively. Up to now we know seven different types of phototrophic consortia, distinguishable by shape as well as by the number and by the species of the epibionts.
