The life mode of Euglena is called mixotrophic. The flagellates can be regarded as both, plants (algae) and animals (protozoa). They can carry out photosynthesis as indicated by the presence of chloroplasts and chlorophyll. The latter can be detected by its red fluorescence under UV light.
