Sapropels in the Mediterranean Sea

Pure cultures of bacteria isolated from Mediterranean sediments
Even many thousand years after sedimenation bacteria of various shapes and phyiological properties can be isolated. Most of them have relatives at the surface. Some appear to be typical members of the 'deep biosphere' which can be found in marine sediments all over the world. These bacteria do not only survive over long periods. They even grow at extremely low rates.
