Bacteria in sediments of the Pacific Ocean

A 10-m sediment core has arrived on board the JOIDES Resolution
offshore the coast of Peru. As it contains toxic hydrogen sulfide,
scientists handling the core wear gasmasks

Taking samples from deep sediments requires special devices. To check whether the sediment is possibly contaminated during sampling, artificial bacteria (fluorescent beads that are easily detected under the microscope) are added to the drilling fluid.
