The phototrophic halophilic flagellate Dunaliellea salina
One of the organisms responsible for the coloration of saltern crystallizer brines is the unicellular green alga Dunaliella salina. Its cells are pigmented red-orange because of their high content of carotenes. Dunaliella accumulates large amounts of glycerol to provide osmotic balance with its highly saline medium.
