Salt-loving black yeasts

Different types of cells form within a hypha at 20 % of salt. At the left side
there are thick-walled, swollen meristematic cells. In the middle there are
melanized meristematic endoconidia, some of them already set free.
When salinity increases the black yeasts undergo a dramatic change. They form meristematic hyphae and within them endoconidia in clumps. Both types of meristematic cells have thick melanized walls which protect them against the high salt concentration of the environment.
